You’ve prepped your 6×6 tile project, laid out the layout, and even mixed the thinset. Then it hits you: picking the wrong trowel can turn a smooth job into a crooked mess with shifting tiles and wasted adhesive. That’s where what size trowel for 6×6 tile installation becomes the make-or-break question. A mismatch here leads to poor coverage, air pockets, or adhesive squeezing up between joints. After looking through specs and user feedback on dozens of trowels from brands like Marshalltown, QEP, and GoldblattUSA, we narrowed down the sizing sweet spot and the tools that deliver it consistently. If you’re working on a backsplash or floor, getting this detail right saves you from rework and frustration. For larger format work, you might also check our guide on What Size Trowel for 12×24 Tile for a similar approach.
For most 6×6 ceramic or porcelain tiles, a 1/4-inch square notch trowel hits the mark. It gives enough adhesive depth for a solid bond without creating a mess. Heavier or textured tiles might need a 3/8-inch notch, but the standard remains reliable. We focused on notch shape, blade material, handle comfort, and price to bring you a mix of margin trowels and full-size notched trowels that cover both tight corners and open floors. Whether you’re a weekend DIYer or a seasoned pro, these picks make the job easier.

The Marshalltown 56D Margin Trowel is a compact but mighty tool designed for precision masonry and tile work. With its 6x2 inch blade, it's purpose-built for getting into the tight spots where full-sized trowels just won't fit. This makes it an essential addition for DIY homeowners tackling bathroom or kitchen tile projects, as well as professional tile setters, masons, and contractors who need a reliable tool for spreading mortar or thin-set in corners, around pipes, and along edges.
In real-world use, the trowel performs admirably. The high carbon steel blade is forged in one piece with the tang, providing excellent flexibility and balance. Users report that it glides through mortar and adhesive with minimal effort, and the slim nose allows for precise leveling in confined areas. The DuraSoft handle is a standout feature, offering a comfortable, non-slip grip that reduces hand fatigue even during extended sessions. Many tile setters and archaeologists have praised its comfort during repetitive scraping and spreading tasks.
Build quality is where Marshalltown truly shines. The blade is tempered, ground, and polished to a smooth finish that resists sticking. The one-piece forging eliminates weak points, and the handle is securely attached with a finger guard for safety. Being made in the USA with global materials gives buyers confidence in its durability. However, like all high carbon steel tools, it requires proper care. If left damp, rust can develop quickly, so wiping it dry after use is a must.
Practicality is another strong suit. At just 3.2 ounces, it's light enough to carry in an apron pocket or tool belt without weighing you down. Storage is simple: just hang it on a peg or keep it in a toolbox drawer. The only minor drawback is the sharpness of the blade corners, which can scratch plastic grout buckets if you aren't careful. Some users have noted this, but it's easily avoided by using a stirring paddle for mixing.
User feedback consistently highlights the trowel's longevity and performance. Many professionals have used Marshalltown trowels for decades and report they outlast cheaper alternatives. While the price is higher than basic entry-level trowels, the investment pays off in reduced hand strain and longer tool life. For anyone serious about tiling, masonry, or precise mortar application, the Marshalltown 56D Margin Trowel is a smart, reliable choice that will serve you well for years.
The Marshalltown 56D Margin Trowel is built from a single piece of high carbon steel, which is then heat-treated, ground, and polished. This forging process ensures the blade and tang are one solid unit, eliminating the weak joints found in cheaper trowels. The result is a tool that offers maximum balance and flexibility while resisting bending or snapping under heavy use.
The steel is finished with a brushed surface that helps reduce mortar sticking, and the edge is ground to a smooth, slightly flexible profile. The DuraSoft handle is molded over the tang and features an ergonomic shape with a finger guard to prevent your hand from slipping forward. This handle material is well-known for its durability and comfort, even in wet or sweaty conditions. Although the tool requires drying after each use to prevent rust, the overall construction is built to last for years of professional or DIY work.

- Comfortable left-handed DuraSoft grip reduces fatigue on long jobs
- Flexible steel blade provides good control and even adhesive coverage
- Square notches deliver consistent bond strength for tile installations
- Lightweight and well-balanced for easy handling
- Made in the USA with quality materials
Cons
- Left-handed design limits use for right-handed users
- Notch size (6x6x6mm) may be too small for large-format tiles requiring deeper adhesive
- Blade flexibility might feel too soft for some users preferring a stiffer trowel
The Marshalltown 702SDL Standard Notched Trowel is a purpose-built tile tool designed for left-handed users who demand precision and comfort during flooring and tiling projects. With its 11 x 4-1/2 inch flexible steel blade and 6x6x6mm square notches, this trowel is engineered to spread thin-set mortar evenly, creating consistent adhesive ridges that ensure strong tile bonding. Whether you are a DIY homeowner updating a kitchen backsplash or a professional contractor laying commercial tile floors, this tool delivers reliable performance.
This trowel is best suited for left-handed tilers, flooring specialists, and masons who need a comfortable, fatigue-reducing handle for extended use. The DuraSoft grip is soft yet resilient, providing a secure hold even when hands get sweaty or dusty. The blade's flexibility allows you to adjust pressure for different tile sizes and substrates, while the aluminum alloy mounting keeps the blade securely attached without adding unnecessary weight.
In real-world use, the square notches create a uniform mortar bed that helps prevent lippage and ensures full coverage under tiles. The 6x6x6mm notch size is ideal for standard wall and floor tiles up to about 8 inches square. For larger format tiles, you might need a deeper notch, but for most residential and light commercial jobs, this trowel performs admirably. The tempered steel blade resists bending and maintains its shape over time, offering good durability for daily use.
Build quality is solid, with a brushed finish on the blade that resists rust and mortar buildup. The handle is molded to fit the left hand comfortably, with a slight contour that promotes a natural wrist position. Cleaning is straightforward: just rinse with water after use and wipe dry. The trowel is lightweight enough to carry in a tool bag without adding bulk, and its compact size makes it easy to store on a shelf or in a toolbox.
One realistic limitation is that this trowel is specifically left-handed, so right-handed users should look for the right-handed version (model 702SDR). Also, the notch size may not be suitable for very large or heavy tiles that require deeper mortar ridges. However, for standard tiling tasks, this tool offers excellent value and performance.
Overall, the Marshalltown 702SDL is a practical investment for any left-handed tiler or DIY enthusiast who values comfort, control, and consistent results. Its ergonomic handle, flexible blade, and precise notches make it a reliable addition to any workshop, garage, or jobsite tool collection. If you are looking for a quality trowel that reduces fatigue and improves productivity, this model is worth considering.
The Marshalltown 702SDL is built with a hard tempered steel blade that offers both flexibility and durability. The blade is riveted to an aluminum alloy mounting, which keeps it securely attached while minimizing weight. The brushed finish on the blade helps resist corrosion and makes cleaning easier. The DuraSoft handle is molded from a resilient material that provides a soft, comfortable grip without slipping. Overall, the construction feels solid and well-balanced, typical of Marshalltown's reputation for quality tools made in the USA with global materials.
The left-handed DuraSoft handle is the standout ergonomic feature of this trowel. It is shaped to fit the natural curve of a left hand, reducing strain on the wrist and forearm during repetitive spreading motions. The soft material absorbs vibration and provides a non-slip grip even when hands are wet or dusty. At just 12.3 ounces, the trowel is lightweight enough to use for extended periods without causing fatigue. This ergonomic design helps tilers maintain consistent pressure and control, leading to better tile adhesion and fewer mistakes.
This trowel is a practical tool for both workshop and jobsite environments. Its compact size and light weight make it easy to carry in a tool bag or bucket. The flexible blade allows you to work on uneven surfaces and adjust to different tile sizes. For DIY projects like a bathroom floor or kitchen backsplash, the 6x6x6mm notches provide the right amount of mortar for standard tiles. On professional jobsites, the trowel's durability and comfort help tilers work efficiently through long days. Cleaning is simple with water, and the blade resists rust when dried properly.
Pros
- Comfortable soft grip handle reduces strain during repetitive spreading tasks.
- Sturdy alloy steel blade resists bending and stays sharp for clean notch lines.
- Square notches deliver consistent adhesive coverage for reliable tile bonding.
- Compact size allows access to tight spots like corners and edges.
- Affordable price point for a professional-grade tool from a trusted brand.
Cons
- Only available in 6mm notch size, which may not suit all tile sizes or adhesive depths.
- Blade width (2") may feel narrow for spreading adhesive over large open areas.
- No included storage case or guard, requiring careful storage to protect the edge.
The Marshalltown MT71 QLT Notched Margin Trowel is a specialized hand tool designed for tile setters, floor installers, and DIY homeowners who need precise adhesive application in confined spaces. Unlike full-sized trowels, this margin trowel features a compact 5-inch by 2-inch blade with 6mm square notches, making it ideal for scooping thin-set or mastic and spreading it along edges, corners, and around obstacles. Its contractor-grade construction ensures reliable performance on everything from bathroom remodels to large flooring projects.
Based on product specifications and user feedback, the MT71 excels in real-world tiling tasks. The square notch shape creates uniform ridges that promote proper tile adhesion and minimize lippage, especially when working smaller tiles or mosaics. The alloy steel blade holds its shape well during repeated use and resists corrosion thanks to its brushed finish. Many users appreciate the soft grip handle, which provides a non-slip, comfortable hold even when hands get sweaty or dirty. This ergonomic design reduces hand fatigue during long sessions, a key advantage for both professionals and DIY enthusiasts tackling weekend projects.
Build quality is a strong point of this Marshalltown trowel. The blade is made from durable alloy steel that maintains its edge and resists bending under pressure. The handle is securely attached and offers a balanced feel, giving the user excellent control during adhesive spreading. While the trowel is lightweight at just 6.4 ounces, it feels solid and well-constructed. The only minor drawback is that the blade is relatively narrow, which might slow down coverage on large open floors, but for detail work and tight areas it's nearly perfect.
Storage and maintenance are straightforward. Because the blade is exposed, it's recommended to clean off dried adhesive after each use and store the trowel in a dry place to prevent rust. There is no included sheath or case, so users should take care to protect the notches from nicks. However, many tradespeople simply keep it in a tool pouch or bucket, where its small footprint is a benefit.
Realistically, the Marshalltown MT71 is not a one-size-fits-all trowel. The fixed 6mm square notch depth is best suited for tiles up to about 12 inches where standard thin-set application is needed. For larger format tiles or different adhesive requirements, you might need additional trowels with varying notch sizes. But for its intended purpose – spreading adhesive in tight spaces – it's a reliable, high-performing tool that earns its place in any tiler's kit.
Whether you're a contractor working on a commercial flooring job or a homeowner laying a new backsplash, the Marshalltown MT71 delivers professional results at a budget-friendly price. Its combination of durability, comfort, and precision makes it a smart addition to your workshop or jobsite tool collection. For those who value a tool that gets into the corners and does the job right, this notched margin trowel is an excellent choice.
The Marshalltown MT71 is built to professional standards with a focus on longevity and reliability. The blade is made from high-quality alloy steel that offers resistance to bending and corrosion. The soft grip handle is overmolded onto the tang for a secure bond, and the brushed finish on the blade reduces glare while protecting against rust. Overall, the materials and assembly reflect Marshalltown's reputation for durable hand tools that withstand daily use on construction sites and in workshops.
For best results with the MT71 margin trowel, use it primarily for spreading adhesive in tight spaces such as corners, edges, and around plumbing fixtures. Apply thin-set at a 45-degree angle to the substrate, using consistent pressure to create even notch ridges. Clean the trowel immediately after use with a putty knife or water before adhesive hardens. When not in use, store it in a dry environment to maintain the blade's condition.
Pros
- Includes three commonly used notch sizes – great value for tile, stone, and block work
- Stainless steel blade stays rust-free even after repeated use with wet mortar
- Comfortable grip handles reduce hand strain over extended periods
- Polished finish resists mortar buildup and cleans up easily with water
- Versatile for not only tile but also concrete repairs, plastering, and drywall finishing
Cons
- Only notched trowels are included – no flat finishing trowel in this set
- Handles are plastic/rubber composite, which may not feel as sturdy as full rubber overmolding
- At 11 inches, the trowels might feel slightly large for detail work in tight corners
If you are tackling a tile floor, backsplash, or even drywall repair, having the right trowel makes the job go smoother. The Peohud 3 Pcs Concrete Trowel set delivers three square notched trowels in the most popular notch sizes: 5/32", 5/16", and 1/2". This set is designed for applying mortar, plaster, cement, and thin-set evenly, giving DIY homeowners, mechanics, contractors, and professional tilers a solid foundation for quality work.
Performance-wise, the square notch pattern helps you control how much adhesive you spread, minimizing air pockets and ensuring proper tile coverage. The polished stainless steel blades resist rust and corrosion, so you can rinse them off after a job without worrying about pitting. User reviews consistently mention that the trowels hold their edge and do not bend under normal pressure, which speaks to the build quality of the steel.
Handling and ergonomics are a strong point. The plastic and rubber handles are shaped to fit your hand, reducing fatigue during long days on your knees. While the grip is not as thick as some premium rubber handles, it still provides adequate control and comfort. The overall weight (2.13 pounds) is reasonable for a set of three trowels, making them easy to carry from job to job.
In terms of storage and maintenance, the trowels are simple to clean – just rinse with water and wipe dry. They do not come with a storage case, but the compact size (11 inches long) allows them to fit easily into a tool pouch or bucket. A light coat of oil after cleaning can prolong blade life, especially in humid workshop or garage environments.
One realistic limitation is that this set strictly contains notched trowels. If you need a flat finishing trowel for smoothing concrete or plaster, you will need to purchase that separately. Additionally, some users might prefer a full rubber handle for maximum vibration dampening, though the hybrid plastic rubber design works well for most applications.
Overall, this Peohud trowel set is a practical, budget-friendly option for anyone installing tile, repairing concrete, or finishing drywall. It provides the essential notch sizes needed for floors and walls, and the stainless steel construction ensures long-lasting performance. Whether you are a weekend warrior tackling a bathroom renovation or a contractor running multiple jobs, this set offers reliable results without breaking the bank.
The Peohud trowel set uses polished stainless steel for the blades, which provides excellent corrosion resistance against wet mortar and plaster. The steel is thick enough to prevent flexing during heavy spreading, yet it remains light. The blade-to-handle attachment is solid, with no wobble reported in user feedback. The plastic rubber handles are molded onto the tang, creating a durable bond that should withstand daily use on job sites and in home workshops. While not a high end contractor grade tool, the build quality justifies the price point, offering reliability for frequent use.

- Flexible blade allows for even adhesive application without gouging.
- Durable construction with aluminum mounting and tempered steel blade.
- Precise notch size ideal for small format tiles and detail work.
- Made in USA quality at a reasonable price point.
Cons
- Right-handed only handle may not suit left-handed users.

- Some users may prefer a wood handle for traditional feel.
The MARSHALLTOWN 779SD Standard Notched Trowel is a purpose-built tool for anyone applying thin-set mortar to small tiles, whether you are a DIY homeowner tackling a kitchen backsplash or a professional contractor laying floor tile. This trowel features a 11 x 4-1/2 inch steel blade with 6x6mm V-shaped notches, making it especially effective for mosaic work, subway tile, and other small-format installations.
In real-world use, the flexible yet hard-tempered steel blade spreads adhesive evenly without digging into the substrate. The V-shaped notches release a consistent amount of mortar, which helps ensure good coverage and bond strength. Users who have worked with similar trowels appreciate that the aluminum alloy mounting keeps the tool lightweight while maintaining rigidity, reducing fatigue during long days on the job.
Build quality is a standout feature. The blade is riveted to an aluminum alloy mount, and the DuraSoft handle is molded for a right-handed grip. The handle material is soft and resilient, providing a secure hold even when hands are sweaty or covered in mortar. Marshalltown constructs this trowel in the USA using global materials, which adds to its reputation for reliability.
Maintenance is straightforward - rinse the blade with water after use and dry it to prevent rust. The steel blade will develop a natural patina over time, but it holds up well under regular cleaning. Storage is simple; the trowel fits easily into a tool bag or on a wall hook.
A realistic limitation is the notch size. At 6x6mm, this trowel is not suited for large-format tiles that require deeper notches (such as 1/2 x 1/2 inch). Also, the right-handed handle design means left-handed tilers may find it less comfortable. However, for its intended purpose of small tile work, the 779SD performs admirably.
Overall, if you frequently install small tiles or need a reliable trowel for detail work, the MARSHALLTOWN 779SD is a worthwhile investment. Its combination of comfort, durability, and precision makes it a practical addition to any tile setter's arsenal, from weekend DIYers to seasoned pros.
The MARSHALLTOWN 779SD is built with a hard-tempered steel blade that offers both flexibility and strength. The blade is riveted to an aluminum alloy mounting, which keeps the overall weight low without compromising structural integrity. The DuraSoft handle is molded to fit the right hand, providing a comfortable and secure grip even when working with wet or slippery hands. Marshalltown's reputation for quality is evident in the clean rivets and balanced feel of the trowel. This tool is made in the USA with globally sourced materials, ensuring consistent manufacturing standards.
The DuraSoft handle on the MARSHALLTOWN 779SD is designed to reduce user fatigue during extended tiling sessions. The soft, rubberized material absorbs vibration and provides a non-slip surface, even when hands are wet or covered in mortar. The handle is contoured for a right-handed grip, which promotes a natural wrist position and reduces strain. While left-handed users may find the handle less comfortable, the overall ergonomic design is a clear advantage for right-handed tilers who spend hours spreading adhesive.
Pros
- Tempered and hardened steel blade offers good flexibility and long-lasting durability
- Comfortable co-molded handle with rubber grip improves control and reduces strain
- Bucket hook is a clever storage solution that keeps the trowel accessible during work
Cons
- Blade is relatively small (6x2 inches) which may limit use for larger surface applications
- Some users might prefer a wider blade for spreading thin-set over bigger areas
- Handle color may show dirt and grime more easily over time
The QEP 6-inch margin trowel (model 42112) is a purpose-built hand tool for applying thinset mortar, adhesive, and other materials in tight spaces. It is part of QEP's 'Professional Tools for Professional Results' line, known for reliable tile and stone installation equipment.
This trowel is best suited for DIY homeowners tackling small tile or flooring repairs, as well as contractors, electricians, and plumbers who need to spread material under toe kicks, around cabinets, or in corners. It also works well for general masonry and stucco work where precise application is needed.
The 6-inch long by 2-inch wide blade is made from ground, tempered, and hardened alloy steel. This gives it enough flexibility to conform slightly to surfaces while resisting bending or breaking during repeated use. The blade's silver finish resists rust, though rinsing and drying after each job is still recommended.
One standout feature is the patented bucket hook molded into the handle. This allows you to hang the trowel on the side of a mixing bucket, keeping it off the floor and easy to grab. The handle itself is co-molded plastic with a non-slip rubber grip. It feels secure even with wet or gloved hands, and the ergonomic shape helps reduce fatigue during extended use.
In terms of practicality, the trowel is lightweight at 0.4 pounds and compact enough to store in a tool belt, apron, or small toolbox. Cleaning is straightforward: just rinse with water and wipe dry. No special maintenance is required beyond keeping it dry to prevent corrosion.
While the 6x2 inch blade is ideal for tight spaces, it is not meant for large floor or wall areas where a larger notched trowel would be more efficient. Some users may wish for a slightly wider blade for better coverage. However, for its intended purpose, this trowel delivers good value at an affordable price. If you are a DIYer or pro who works with thinset or adhesive in confined areas, the QEP margin trowel is a practical addition to your workshop or jobsite kit.
Pros
- High-carbon steel blades provide excellent durability and edge retention
- Comfortable ergonomic handles improve control and reduce strain

If you are a DIY homeowner, contractor, or mason looking for a reliable finishing tool, the Goldblatt margin trowel set deserves a close look. This set includes two professional-grade trowels: a 6x2 inch and a 5x2 inch model. Both are designed specifically for spreading and smoothing concrete, cement, and tile materials. Goldblatt has been manufacturing trade tools since 1885, so you are getting a product backed by over a century of experience. The set is built for durability and precision, making it a practical addition to any workshop, garage, or jobsite.
The blades are made from high-carbon steel, which offers good wear resistance and holds a sharp edge for consistent finishing work. Whether you are buttering tiles, patching concrete, or applying mortar in tight corners, these trowels deliver reliable performance. The ergonomic handles are designed to provide a firm, comfortable grip, which helps reduce hand fatigue during long hours of use. This is especially important for contractors and masons who spend extended periods on their feet. The lightweight construction also makes the trowels easy to maneuver, giving you better control over your work.
Build quality is solid for the price point. The high-carbon steel blades are heat-treated for added strength and durability. The handles are securely attached, so you won't have to worry about them coming loose during use. The two sizes give you versatility: the 6-inch trowel is great for larger areas, while the 5-inch version is handy for detail work and tight spaces. Both trowels fit comfortably in a standard tool pouch, making them convenient to carry around the jobsite or workshop. Maintenance is straightforward: just wipe them clean after use and keep them dry to prevent rust.
One realistic limitation is that these trowels are designed specifically for finishing work. They are not meant for heavy-duty digging or mixing. Also, the high-carbon steel blades may need occasional sharpening to maintain their edge, especially if you are working with abrasive materials. Some users might prefer a rubberized or softer grip, but the ergonomic handles are still comfortable for most tasks. Overall, the Goldblatt margin trowel set offers good value for DIY homeowners and professionals alike.
Based on product specifications and user feedback, this set is a smart choice for anyone involved in masonry, tile, or concrete work. It is durable, comfortable to use, and versatile enough for both small repairs and larger projects. Whether you are a contractor working on a new build or a homeowner tackling a weekend patio project, these trowels can help you achieve a clean, professional finish. They also make a practical gift for a tradesperson or DIY enthusiast.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a V-notch trowel for 6×6 tiles?
Yes, a V-notch trowel works well for 6×6 tiles, especially on walls. The V-shape gives a slightly different adhesive pattern that helps tiles grab without excessive squeeze-out. For floors, a square notch is more common because it provides more consistent coverage. The MARSHALLTOWN Standard Notched Trowel with V-notches (6x6mm) is a solid choice for wall installations with its comfortable DuraSoft handle.
What happens if I use a trowel that’s too large for 6×6 tiles?
Using an oversized notch, like a 3/8-inch or larger on 6×6 tiles, typically causes too much adhesive to spread. This leads to messy cleanup, potential lippage, and wasted material. The adhesive can also ooze into the grout joints, making cleaning harder. Sticking with the recommended 1/4-inch square notch avoids these headaches.
Do I need a margin trowel or a full-size notched trowel for 6×6 tiles?
It depends on the area. A margin trowel (like the Marshalltown MT71 or QEP 6×2) is perfect for tight spots: under cabinets, around toe kicks, or on backsplashes. For larger floor areas, a full-size notched trowel (like the MARSHALLTOWN 779SD or 702SDL) covers more ground faster and keeps notch consistency across the job. Many pros keep both on hand.
Is stainless steel better than high-carbon steel for a trowel?
Both work well, but high-carbon steel (like in the MARSHALLTOWN 56D) offers excellent durability and edge retention if kept dry. Stainless steel resists rust and is easier to clean between uses. The Peohud set uses polished stainless steel, which holds up well with thinset. For most DIY projects, either is fine; just clean the tool after each session.
What’s the best trowel for 6×6 porcelain tiles on a floor?
For 6×6 porcelain floor tiles, a 1/4-inch square notch trowel is standard. The MARSHALLTOWN 702SDL with square notches and a left-handed DuraSoft handle is a great pick for right-handed users who prefer that layout. Alternatively, the Goldblatt Industries margin trowel set includes a 6×2 blade that works in tighter floor areas. Always check your adhesive manufacturer’s recommendation for notch depth.
How do I clean thinset off my trowel after installing 6×6 tiles?
Rinse your trowel with clean water as soon as possible before the thinset dries. The QEP margin trowel has a patent-pending bucket hook, making it easy to store in a water bucket during breaks, which helps keep the blade clean. For dried thinset, a stiff brush or a wire brush can remove it, but prevention is easier.
