Sudden timber pinching during a rip cut can instantly throw stock back across your workshop, ruining materials and threatening operator safety. Keeping stock aligned as it passes the teeth is critical for smooth feed rates and clean kerfs. Many woodworkers ask what is a table saw riving knife when setting up or refurbishing their machines. At its core, this curved steel plate sits directly behind the blade to prevent the cut kerf from pinching together and triggering violent kickback. It rises, falls, and tilts in tandem with the arbor mechanism, keeping a constant protective gap intact even when cutting precise angles on a table saw.

After evaluating manufacturer technical specifications, steel grades, and user feedback, having a true factory-aligned splitter makes every pass significantly smoother. Premium replacements crafted from quenched steel resist bending and preserve rigid blade alignment under heavy feed pressure. Whether you run a job-site portable unit or a stationary cabinet saw, a properly dimensioned safety splitter protects your hands while extending motor life. Upgrading a missing, warped, or worn safety plate delivers immediate peace of mind for heavy ripping routines.

Detailed Review

The N695948 riving knife is a direct-fit replacement safety component manufactured to service the DeWalt DWE7485 compact table saw. On any table saw, the riving knife is a critical piece of safety hardware that sits immediately behind the blade. Woodworkers, carpenters, and DIY remodelers who have misplaced their original splitter or bent their factory part will find this a straightforward and practical replacement to keep their saw safe and functional.

In practical cutting applications, a properly installed riving knife plays a vital role in preventing severe kickback and blade pinching. As lumber passes through the saw blade, internal stresses within the wood can cause the kerf to close up and squeeze the rear teeth of the spinning blade. The N695948 is designed to keep the cut kerf separated, mitigating the risk of the workpiece binding and being propelled back toward the operator during ripping operations.

The build quality of this replacement part features a durable silver metal plate engineered to match the profile and mounting slots of the original equipment. Maintaining a true, unbent riving knife is essential, as even minor warping on a splitter can cause workpiece hang-ups and compromise rip cut accuracy.

Installation is relatively simple and connects directly into the internal mounting mechanism of the DeWalt DWE7485 table saw. As with any saw adjustment, the tool should always be completely disconnected from power before installation. It is recommended to wear heavy work gloves when handling the knife and working near the saw arbor. Once mounted, users should verify that the splitter aligns properly with the saw blade to ensure smooth feeding of stock.

A clear limitation of this product is its narrow compatibility profile. Because table saw riving knives rely on precise mounting slots and specific curvature matching the saw blade diameter, this part is specifically intended for the DeWalt DWE7485 model and will not fit larger 10-inch saws or alternative brands. Buyers must double-check their saw model number before purchasing.

For owners of the DeWalt DWE7485 who are missing their safety knife or dealing with a damaged original, this replacement part provides an economical, practical fix. Restoring proper safety equipment is vital for responsible table saw operation, making this part a smart addition to any maintenance lineup.

Compatibility & Fit

This replacement riving knife is engineered to replace part number N695948 and is specifically listed for compatibility with the DeWalt DWE7485 table saw. Due to the exact geometry required for mounting slots, blade clearance, and kerf alignment, table saw splitters are not universal accessories.

Detailed Review

The SURPOUF N695948 Table Saw Riving Knife is a dedicated replacement part created for woodworkers, carpenters, and DIY enthusiasts operating the DWE7485 compact table saw. In everyday workshop and jobsite woodworking, a properly fitted riving knife is an essential piece of equipment. If your original factory knife has been bent during heavy transport, misplaced after non-through cuts, or damaged over time, this aftermarket replacement offers a practical and accessible solution to get your tool back to safe working order.

Functioning directly behind the saw blade, this component rises and lowers with the arbor assembly to maintain a physical barrier between the two separated sides of a workpiece. As wood passes through the blade during rip cuts, internal stresses often cause the lumber to pinch inward. The 0.06-inch thin profile of the N695948 knife tracks closely with the saw kerf to keep the cut open, helping prevent the rear teeth of the blade from catching the stock and violently throwing it toward the user.

Constructed from durable metal with a clean black finish, the knife matches the essential factory dimensions at 6.98 inches in length, 1.83 inches in width, and roughly 0.06 inches in thickness. Its smooth surface helps workpieces slide past without snagging or dragging during feeding. Because it weighs just under 0.18 pounds, it does not add noticeable drag to the internal height adjustment mechanism of the saw arbor, allowing for smooth up-and-down travel during setup changes.

Installation is straightforward and designed to drop directly into the throat plate mounting bracket of the DWE7485 saw. Users familiar with table saw maintenance can swap out the unit quickly by disconnecting power, removing the throat plate, releasing the factory locking clamp, and positioning the replacement knife into the retention slot. Even novice woodworkers should find the swap manageable, provided they follow standard manufacturer alignment procedures to ensure the knife sits parallel with the blade kerf.

A clear limitation of this accessory is its specialized compatibility. It is made specifically to replace OEM part number N695948 on designated models like the DWE7485, so it will not fit larger 10-inch contractor saws or models from other brands with different mounting brackets. Additionally, while a riving knife provides vital defense against workpiece pinching, it does not eliminate all cutting hazards, meaning proper push sticks, featherboards, and safe operating practices remain mandatory.

For owners of the DWE7485 table saw who are currently working without a functional splitter, this SURPOUF replacement is a smart, low-cost investment. It restores crucial factory safety functionality, aligns well with standard kerf widths, and allows you to keep ripping dimensional lumber and sheet goods with added peace of mind.

Compatibility & Fit

This replacement riving knife is designed to match the OEM part number N695948 (also referenced under DWB-N695948) specifically for the DWE7485 table saw. It is critical to verify your saw model number before ordering, as riving knives rely on precise mounting cutouts, curvature, and thickness to function properly with specific blade diameters and arbor brackets.

Because the blade plate measures approximately 0.06 inches thick, it is suited to track cleanly behind compatible thin-kerf blades used on 8-1/4-inch portable jobsite saws. Using this knife on larger 10-inch saws or older benchtop units will result in improper clearance, misalignment, or failed mounting, so buyers should stick strictly to the stated compatible model.

The Ohoho N506855 table saw riving knife is a dedicated replacement part created for woodworkers, carpenters, and remodelers who run the widely used Dewalt DWE7491RS and DWE7491RSR jobsite table saws. A riving knife is an indispensable component of any modern table saw setup, functioning directly behind the blade to prevent cut lumber from closing together and pinching the teeth. If an original factory splitter becomes bent, damaged, or lost over years of jobsite transit, replacing it promptly is critical for maintaining proper cutting alignment and operational safety.

In practical cutting tasks such as ripping dimensional framing lumber, plywood sheets, or hardwoods, a properly positioned riving knife tracks closely with the saw blade throughout height and bevel adjustments. The N506855 profile is engineered to follow the arc of the saw blade within the internal mounting bracket of compatible Dewalt saws. By holding the freshly cut kerf open as material feeds through, this accessory helps reduce the chance of workpiece binding, which remains one of the primary causes of aggressive table saw kickback.

Build quality centers on a rigid, durable material profile finished in black. Weighing roughly 0.24 pounds, the plate is thick enough to resist flexing when wider boards or tension-filled lumber press against it during through-cuts. Its slim, compact profile ensures it stays tucked below the outer perimeter of the blade, allowing users to make both standard through-cuts and non-through cuts without having to remove the knife entirely, depending on saw configuration and setup.

Installation is straightforward for anyone familiar with the tool-free or quick-release lever mechanism found on Dewalt jobsite table saws. Users simply disconnect tool power, lower the saw arbor mechanism, release the internal clamp, and slide this replacement piece into the factory mounting slot. Before making any cuts, woodworkers should visually confirm that the knife sits perfectly centered with the saw blade plate and kerf, adjusting the saw internal alignment pins according to manufacturer guidelines if any drift is present.

A realistic limitation of this product is its narrow compatibility envelope. It is specifically designed around part number N506855 and fits Dewalt DWE7491RS and DWE7491RSR models, meaning it will not fit older compact Dewalt saws, alternative brands, or different arbor assemblies. Additionally, it ships strictly as the standalone plate without extra mounting screws, secondary guard shields, or anti-kickback pawl hardware.

For owners of the Dewalt DWE7491RS looking to restore their table saw back to safe working order after losing or warping the original factory splitter, the Ohoho N506855 offers an affordable, dependable solution. It delivers the precise fit required for the saw mounting bracket, helping maintain smooth material flow and essential workshop safety without the high markup of proprietary factory packaging.

Compatibility & Fit

The Ohoho N506855 riving knife is strictly compatible with specific Dewalt jobsite table saw models, including the DWE7491RS and DWE7491RSR. It matches the factory mounting profile of OEM part number N506855, ensuring that the mounting slots lock securely into the internal arbor clamp.

Buyers should confirm their exact table saw model number on their tool data plate prior to purchase. This accessory will not fit smaller portable saws such as the DWE7485, older DW745 models, or table saws from other power tool manufacturers.

Safety & Function

A riving knife is designed to stay in constant alignment with the saw blade as it tilts and changes height, serving as a physical barrier that prevents stock from contacting the rising teeth at the back of the cut. While no device can completely eliminate kickback or operator risk, using a properly aligned riving knife is one of the most effective mechanical safeguards on a table saw.

Always verify blade and knife alignment with the power disconnected before running material through the saw. The knife should sit centered behind the blade body without extending beyond the outer kerf thickness, ensuring smooth workpiece passage without catching or jamming.

Detailed Review

The VIGO POWER replacement riving knife is a dedicated safety component manufactured specifically for owners of Ridgid R4512 and R4520 table saws. A functioning riving knife is a vital element on any modern table saw, designed to track directly behind the blade to prevent the cut kerf from pinching together as internal wood tension releases. Whether your original factory knife was misplaced during non-through cuts, bent from improper storage, or simply worn out, this replacement part aims to restore your saw to safe operating condition without requiring expensive proprietary parts assemblies.

In practical cutting applications, maintaining an unbent, properly seated riving knife helps support cleaner ripping through dimensional lumber, solid hardwoods, and sheet materials like plywood. The profile is engineered to match the curvature of the blade and keep the kerf separated throughout the cut, reducing friction and minimizing the risk of binding that can lead to workpiece kickback. While no accessory can make a table saw completely immune to kickback or operator error, keeping a true, sturdy riving knife in place remains an essential best practice for daily shop cutting.

Constructed from high-strength quenched steel, the plate offers solid resistance to bending, deformation, and operational wear. When boards with significant case hardening or internal stress pinch shut during a rip cut, a flimsy splitter can warp or deflect out of line; the quenched steel build here helps withstand those lateral pressures. The smooth black finish aids in reducing material adhesion and friction as stock passes past the back of the blade arbor assembly.

Installation is straightforward because the piece is engineered to use the original factory mounting points on the Ridgid R4512 and R4520 internal brackets. You do not need custom modifications or specialized machine tools to slide it into place. As with any table saw accessory replacement, users should always disconnect power to the saw before installation and carefully verify that the knife aligns perfectly centered with the blade before making any test cuts.

The main limitation of this accessory is its specialized compatibility. It is engineered specifically for the Ridgid R4512 and R4520 platforms, meaning it will not fit other brands or even different Ridgid saw models without modification, which should never be attempted on safety gear. Additionally, while the mounting points are designed to be plug-and-play, you must still take the time to inspect blade-to-knife clearance and alignment, as tolerances can vary slightly across individual saw castings.

For woodworkers, DIY hobbyists, and remodelers running a Ridgid R4512 or R4520 table saw without an operational splitter, the VIGO POWER riving knife provides a sensible, durable, and cost-effective replacement. Its sturdy steel construction and direct-fit profile make it an essential workshop addition that helps restore critical factory safety functionality to your saw setup.

Compatibility & Installation

Compatibility for this VIGO POWER riving knife is limited strictly to Ridgid table saw models R4512 and R4520. Because table saw mounting mechanisms and blade-to-arbor geometries vary substantially between manufacturers and even between production revisions, this part should only be purchased for the listed models.

The knife installs directly into the existing factory mounting bracket beneath the throat plate using standard procedures. Always ensure the table saw is completely disconnected from power before removing the throat plate or adjusting the mounting bracket. Once seated, check that the knife follows the blade kerf evenly without rubbing against the teeth or deflecting to either side before resuming cutting operations.

Frequently Asked Questions About What Is A Table Saw Riving Knife

How does a riving knife differ from a traditional table saw splitter?

A riving knife mounts to the saw arbor mechanism and moves up, down, and tilts along with the blade. Traditional splitters remain fixed to the table frame at a set height, requiring total removal for non-through grooving cuts. The constant tight gap of a true knife provides continuous protection during plunge or dado cuts without getting in your way.

Can you use a riving knife with thin-kerf saw blades?

Yes, provided the steel thickness of the knife is thinner than the kerf of the teeth but thicker than the blade body. If the knife is thicker than the cut kerf, the timber will bind against the plate and stall your feed stroke. Always verify your blade body specifications before selecting a replacement plate for your benchtop unit.

Is a riving knife necessary when using a crosscut sled?

No, a riving knife is typically unnecessary during crosscuts because the sled supports both sides of the stock throughout the entire stroke. When building a dedicated table saw crosscut sled, many woodworkers lower or remove the knife if it extends above the blade height. However, keeping a low-profile knife installed prevents cutoff scrap from wandering into the rear rising teeth.

What steel grade offers the best durability for replacement knives?

High-strength quenched steel or precision-ground carbon steel provides the best balance of rigidity and wear resistance. These hardened alloys resist bending when warped boards twist during heavy ripping operations. Stiff materials ensure the blade and knife stay aligned over years of workshop use.

Why does timber bind against the riving knife during a rip cut?

Timber binds either because internal wood tension is closing the kerf or the knife is misaligned with the blade arbor. Releasing internal grain stress can pinch the knife firmly, which proves the safety device is doing its job by stopping kickback. If binding happens on every board, adjust the mounting bracket alignment screws to center the knife behind the blade.
